What is Data Inventory?

Data inventory refers to the process and output of identifying and categorizing all of the data within an organization. This includes understanding where the data is stored, how it is used, who has access to it, and the level of sensitivity and importance of each piece of information. By creating a comprehensive data inventory, organizations can better protect their sensitive information, mitigate risks, and ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations and mandates. A robust data inventory is a critical component of any effective data centric security strategy, enabling organizations to proactively identify and address potential security threats before they become a data breach.
