Our DSPM Approach

At Symmetry Systems, We Look at Data Differently

To protect data, you must fully understand it—and not just from the outside. When breaches happen, identifying which data objects were breached is exceedingly difficult and leads to expensive, worst-case breach incident response.

We knew it was possible to get complete data observability ahead of a breach—to prevent them in the first place or make response and recovery easier. That’s why our research led us to a better way to approach data security.

While running the Spark Lab at UT-Austin, Symmetry Systems’ co-founders identified the need to provide unified visibility into data objects across all data stores, answering data security and compliance questions that traditional tools cannot. DataGuard’s principles for DSPM grew from the pursuit of the solution.

Be Data Centric

Unlike traditional or legacy tools that focus on securing just the systems and networks on which the data is stored or transmitted, DataGuard DSPM takes a data-centric focus—regardless of the cloud or data store environment—providing a full and holistic view across cloud service providers.

Adopt a Zero-Trust Approach

Applications and service roles remain fundamentally over-privileged since they have to access multiple stores to get work done. As a result, a compromised identity or application has a large blast-radius regarding data. DataGuard DSPM enables enterprises to tighten down data access to least-privilege levels, and keep them there—fulfilling one of the key tenets of Zero Trust.

Protect Data Where it Exists

To achieve holistic observability, many solutions remove metadata or even data itself from the environment. This can actually put data at risk. Our approach is to use agentless scanning and assess data within the cloud workloads, so no data ever leaves the environment.

Treat Data Like Family

Data is the lifeblood of many organizations, but it is either dealt with as an afterthought of organizational security or like it is something to be feared. We approach data security with the view that organizations should respect data and have a common understanding of it. They should be intentional about it—constraining it with controls, while allowing it to grow. And that they should be able to let data go when it is no longer needed.
